Speech Language Evaluations

Evaluating a child for speech and language services is a comprehensive process.  Much information is gathered to ensure that your child’s communicative needs are understood and appropriately met.  Prior to administering any standardized/non-standardized tests, a case history is gathered and interviews with parents and the child are conducted. Additionally, reports from teachers, pediatricians, and any other service providers are collected and reviewed.

Available Assessments:

Evaluations for Preschool Children (2-5 years):

Once all of the necessary information has been gathered, various speech and language diagnostic tools are available to evaluate your preschool child’s speech, language, or play skills. Evaluations generally require 2-4 hours depending on the particular assessment. Speech evaluations examine articulation and phonological skills; language evaluations focus on receptive and expressive skills. Approximately 7-10 days following testing, parents will receive a detailed diagnostic report that provides valuable information regarding their child’s areas of strength and weakness, comparisons to the developmental norms, and recommendations regarding the areas that would likely benefit from speech and language services.

Evaluations for School-Aged Children (Ages 5 and up):

Evaluations for school-aged children assess your child’s speech and language skills and can take 2-4 hours depending on the particular assessment.  Speech assessments focus on articulation and phonological skills. Language assessments are available to measure: language comprehension, syntactic skills, semantic skills, reading fluency, listening comprehension, social communication and writing skills. Approximately 7-10 days following testing, parents will receive a detailed diagnostic report that provides valuable information regarding their child’s areas of strength and weakness, comparisons to the developmental norms, and recommendations regarding the areas that would likely benefit from speech and language services.
